Lost at Sea

This UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), BITM, Kolkata launched a new interpretive Gallery ‘Lost at Sea’ – on May 02, 2025, the 67th Foundation Day of the museum.

Unprecedented sea-level rise combined with dangerously warming waters due to climate change, pollution, overfishing – all leave the oceans hot, acidic and lifeless. But even if we live hundreds of miles from shore, we need a healthy ocean. Immediate and transformative actions may still prevent many species – including us – from being lost at sea. But it can be hard to care for a place we’ve never experienced before.

The Gallery ‘Lost at Sea’ invites us to sea more. With interpretive displays of the scale of lost species, interactive multimedia conveying the immediate threats to ocean life, augmented reality walkway highlighting key ocean facts, virtual reality exhibits digitizing the ancient Japanese practise of printing fish, replica of the skeleton system of Vaquita – the endangered dolphin – and exploration of the possible worth of the Ocean – the Gallery invites visitors to stay current and make waves in the field of ocean conservation. All because, our oceans are worth it – and more.
